What are Republicans For? An Answer and a Rebuttal

In The Wall Street Journal, dated January 26, 2021, on the opinion page (A17)  I noticed an editorial, “What are Republicans For?” By Joseph Edstein.  Having read the editorial, knowing that it favors the Republican Party, I would like to respond.

The full text can be found by clicking the address below:

Some of these points in this editorial, which I will cover, are right.  They are legitimate and I always have been in agreement with them.  My parents were Republican, and having grown up being taught them, in the early 1970s,  they’ve always made a lot of sense.

The problem is that today, the party has gone to extremes, as to what happened on January 6, 2021.  The Republican Party today have started to disregard the U.S. Constitution, and have openly admitted that they will go as far as to lie, cheat, and steal to win elections.  It is because of this that I have become a Democrat.

They weren’t always like this, which I will explain.

I will also take quotes from Mr. Epstein’s opinions, and will either agree or challenge them one at a time.  Before going any further, I recommend that you click the above address and read the article in its entirety, then continue with this article.

“We know what the Republicans are against, which includes the crime currently rampant on our big cities’ streets, the want of anything resembling order on our southern border, the melange of progressive giveaway programs, and more.”

Agreed;  on all three counts!  (I’ll leave out the ‘and more.’)

We have crimes such as looters and shoplifters coming into stores in broad daylight, stealing what they want, in large quantities, and running off and getting away with it.

This action cannot be tolerated, and law enforcement needs to come in and deal with this, using force, lethal force if necessary, and imposing severe penalties, such as long term jail sentences.

I know many policemen are unjustly and unfairly killing Blacks, igniting anger nationally, and this problem does have to be confronted.  Many organizations are doing just that.

However, we cannot tolerate looters, vandals and rapists and allow them to get away with what they do, either.  This also must be confront and the guilty parties involved must have the law come down hard on them, regardless of race, color or national origin.  All must be punished equally, no excuses.

The southern border with Mexico needs to be upgraded.  I am, however, against “the wall” and I am glad Biden stopped construction on it and is tearing it down.  We do need more passionate immigration laws and we should let more refugees come.  One proposal is, “let them in, but don’t give them welfare,” of which I am in agreement.

Here’s why.

FIrst, we need to let them in in a swift but orderly manner.  More entrances are needed to prevent them from crossing the desert, risking their lives or being subjected to smugglers.

This country is in want of unskilled labor, and these immigrants are willing to do them.  They are not taking jobs from Americans, they are taking jobs Americans will not take, but needs to be done nonetheless.

The advantage to this is that our markets will function and the families of these immigrants grow up to be productive and law-abiding citizens.  They will go to colleges and universities and contribute greatly to the American economy, in turn compete with the rest of the world.

As for no welfare, their customs of family and community have people working and living together and helping each other, without welfare.

I have seen all this.  It’s been happening for years, and the people assimilate and become Americans.  All this prejudice and racial fear of them is unfounded.

“…the melange of progressive giveaway programs…”

This makes a lot of sense, and this is why we have such a huge deficit.

I was once a member of “Citizens Against Government Waste,” and we do waste billions of dollars each year in our annual budget.

For example, tax money goes to an indoor rain forest in Iowa, a museum of porcelain dishes, or just advertising “Free Money”.  This has got to stop.

We cannot have welfare addicts either, where able-bodied people collect welfare “because they can.”

There are V.A. programs that fund disabled veterans, but many of these veterans fought for their country and are permanently disabled because of it.

I do favor government work programs, such as rebuilding the infrastructure, which is an absolute necessity.  However, funding pet projects by a politician so he can remain in office, i.e. buying votes, we cannot have.

This is just a very small list here, and it is in reality magnified thousands of times, but I think you get the point here.

So for the above mentioned facts I am basically in full agreement.  The Republican Party, believe it or not, once did stand for the worker.

Back in the 1970s, there were “Nixon Republicans.”  As bad as he was, Nixon did work his way up the ladder, and wanted to set an example for others to do the same.

It was when Reagan became President that the party changed, becoming a party for the rich.  Many working Republicans did not see that at the time, and many still don’t to this day.  Many still think that the party still stands for the working man, and that is no longer true.  Those in the upper echelons simply don’t care about them, other than wooing them for their votes.

“But what is the party, what in general, are American Conservatives actually for?  The standard answer would include free enterprise, freedom from interference from big government, equality of opportunity if not necessarily of results, the wisdom of our Founding Fathers as embodied in our Constitution, and now, more recently, an unlocked down economy, fairness in reporting in the media, on politics, generally.”

This is an earful.  Some of these I agree with up to a point, others such as open schools (no masks necessary - this essay was written during the Covid pandemic) and an unlocked down economy, I am against, because with Covid-19, this could be fatal to a lot of people.  How, catching the virus from others and at times, leading to hospitalization and death.  This has been happening.

Free enterprise I am in agreement.  Freedom from interference from big government I agree with up to a point.   We have to have safety for workers, because many jobs are dangerous, and if safety and protection measures aren’t put in place, many more workers will suffer on-the-job injuries, dismemberment, and death.

These industries also have to pay their fair share of the taxes, which many of them don’t do.  Some go as far as outsourcing to other countries for lower taxes and cheap labor, leaving the American workers out of a job, in poverty, and in the welfare line.

Affirmative action is good up to a point, until everything, meaning all races can finally balance out fairly.  One drawback is what my brother-in-law once asked me, “Would you like to have a doctor who was educated on Affirmative Action perform a quadruple bypass on you?”

Opportunity should be available to all, but only the best in that field should be hired regardless of race, creed, color, religion, or national origin.

“…the wisdom of our Founding Fathers as embodied in our Constitution.”

Not anymore, and it’s deteriorating fast.  Many Republicans today have no regard for the Constitution and many either want to change it in their favor, or abolish it completely.

Here’s proof.

When Mitch McConnell, back in 2016, refused to hold hearings for Merrick Garland, nominated by President Obama for Supreme Court Justice, he replied, “I know it’s written in the Constitution, but I don’t care.  Make me!”

That says it all.  For McConnell, this is grounds for treason on his part, who is a Republican.  Are we going to allow this.  Of what worth is our Constitution if nobody cares?  This is the beginning of the road to tyranny, and this is no exaggeration.

“…open schools, and un-locked down economy…”

We still have a pandemic and we have to take protective measures, and that includes inoculations and wearing a mask.  This is not politics, it’s a matter of human survival.  I don’t understand why so many people are against vaccinations when so many people are dying.  Sadder yet, there is a way to escape this, but these anti-vaxxers will not budge.

Some do change their minds, when it is too late.  They refuse to get vaccinated, catch Covid, and then die on a hospital bed.  As they lay dying, they admitted they were not vaccinated and then urge everyone to get vaccinated before it’s too late.

Then they die.

Unfortunately, many still don’t get the message.

“…fairness in reporting in the media on politics, generally.”

They aren’t fair.

First of all, they believe the big lie that Trump was cheated out of the 2020 election.  He wasn’t;  Biden won fair and square.

Some of the media, such as FOX News, praises the Republican Party and justifies everything they do no matter how bad they are.

Up until this point, this editorial, rebuttal to an editorial, really, supposedly told of the virtues of the Republican.  I must admit, they still have a few of these, all of which you can count on one hand, but they are losing them, fast.

One example is the federal budget.  The Republicans use to be thrifty or conservative with federal income.  Not anymore, and what occurred during the Clinton Administration proves it.

President Bill Clinton had a budget surplus in the late 1990s, and Vice-President Al Gore, when he ran in 2000, want this surplus to continue, and use it to pay down the national debt.  Both were Democrats.

Unfortunately, the office was given to George W. Bush.  When he cut taxes for the rich, the surplus was wiped out, and the deficit returned and heavily increased, to which we, the U.S., never recovered.

So much for the Republicans wanting to preserve the economy.

“Democrats care about social justice, they care about climate change, they care about women and almost all minorities, they care about voting rights — they, not to put a fine point on it, care!”

Yes they do, and they should — so should the Republicans.  How can they not care?  If they want a safe and stable society, they should care!

Anyone, no matter who they are, with a good job, living in a good home, with the promise of a future, with the right to vote and justice whenever it is needed, will not want to go out and commit any crimes.  This is the recipe for a peaceful and stable society.

The alternative would be riots, looting, vandalism, and mobs.  Just look at South America or the Middle East, any society that doesn’t have a middle class, just rich and poor.

How can these Republicans not see this?

There needs to be a return to working across the aisle.  If the polarization of Democrats and Republicans ignoring each other continues like this, the U.S. will be well on its way to collapse.  It’s happening already, and it’s all because of their oppression of women, minorities, and voter suppression.

President John F. Kennedy once said, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable.”

We would do well to remember those words.

Climate change is not political, it’s a proven fact and a threat to the entire human race.

It has been stated that Republicans do not believe in climate change, but I think many of them do.  They’re just afraid to admit it because they are being paid off by polluting industries for their re-election campaigns.  In order for them to continue to receive this support, they are “asked” to vote against any bill that would place more restrictions on these industries that would otherwise protect the environment.  This would mean less money for them and their campaigns, not to mention more money in their pockets.

This, as global temperatures increase, causing the sea level to rise, leading to more floods, droughts, stronger hurricanes, wildfires, and tropical insects migrating north, leading to more diseases.

The Republicans have a choice;  preservation of the environment or more money in their pockets.  Unfortunately, they do not care about the environment and the fact that they have cut back on pollution laws, allowing the industries to pollute more, thereby harming the environment, and especially young children (lead and mercury poisoning, breathing in soot) causing lung and brain damage is proof.  These are proven facts.  Yet the Republicans are doing nothing about this.

“In the mind of the general public, Republicans remain the party of the wealthy, the infamous 1%.”

True!  Look at how they lower taxes for the rich.  The money saved will simply add to their bank accounts;  this is money they do not need, will never miss, and cannot even begin to spend.  We, the American people pay for this, though higher taxes for the middle and working class, budget cuts on public services, such as police and fire protection.  All this results in an increased budget deficit, adding to an already bloated national debt.  This huge debt will someday catch up with us, leading to a collapsed economy.  What then?

“Republicans, in this view, are anti-Democrat, little more, with no appealing positions of their own, no worldview, no philosophy beyond their own selfishness.

“This, of course isn’t true.”

Oh, yes it is true;  all of it!

Republicans are passing voter suppression laws, claim to protect against voter fraud, but the American people see right through this fiasco.  The real reason is to keep Democrats from winning an office, ever again.

This smacks of one-party rule, by Republican Conservatives only, no one else.  This will lead to a totalitarian regime, the Constitution abolished, a revival of Jim Crow laws, and ALL rights taken away from Americans.  This is no exaggeration.

Look at Mitch McConnell’s actions in nominating Supreme Court justices.

The Republicans have no vision for American for the future.  The proposal for rebuilding the infrastructure came from Democrats.  They have no appealing positions for the American people, no worldview, and no philosophy.

Whatever philosophy they did have in the past is gone.

During the Watergate hearings back in the early 1970s, many Republicans did support Nixon, but when the cover-up was exposed, with all the corruption, bribes, blackmail, dealing with the F.B.I. and C.I.A. for Nixon’s advantage, all illegal actions, the Republicans turned against Nixon because they realized they could not support or condone his actions.

The Republicans today will stoop to any level to keep themselves in power, going as far as ignoring the Constitution, passing voter suppression laws, reviving Jim Crow laws, and taking away women’s rights, all for wealth and power for themselves.

“This, of course, isn’t true.  But Republican leaders haven’t done enough to answer the charges against their own party.”

No they haven’t, and many of them are afraid to stand up for what’s right.

If what I have written so far is false, them all I have to say in response is, PROVE ME WRONG!

I would love to hear the other side of the story, but words are not enough.

If I am wrong, then,

-Stop voter suppression!

-If you lose an election, take it like an adult and accept defeat!

-Fight for racial equality and women’s rights!

-Support the Constitution!

-Stop tolerating corrupt and power hungry leaders who preach hate and want to wreck the goals of the current President and other far-seeing leaders.  People like that have no place in government.

-Work across the aisle with Democrats.  Hear them out.  If they have good ideas, support them.  Once an election is over, it’s over.  Whoever wins is in office, whoever loses isn’t. Move on and govern the country.

-Hatred of other officials, including the President, has no place here.  Co-operate with the President on essential matters, no matter what party he/she, or you are.

-Senator Mitch McConnell was bent on destroying the presidential administrations of both Obama and Biden.  This cannot be tolerated.  Someone like that should be removed from his position in the Senate or Congress, and replace with a decent, open, cooperative, and far seeing leader.

“Those tasks that only governments can perform - defense of the realm, the maintenance of law and order, the repair of the infrastructure, and the coordination of relief in emergencies - are force to compete for their budgets with activities that free citizens, left to themselves, might have managed far more effectively through the association of volunteers, backed up, when necessary, by private insurance.”

TRUE!  During the Depression of the 1930s, neighbors, even strangers, got together and provided for each other what was needed for survival without government assistance of any kind.  There were “Hoovervilles” in places, but even there, people looked out for one another, and this is the way it should be today.  This would make for better individuals and a better society.

There are, however, two flaws here.

The repair of the infrastructure no longer attracts the interest of the Republican Party.  A bill was passed to repair the infrastructure through Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan, and many Republicans had to vote on it, including Mitch McConnell.  In order for them to protect their own positions of power, they’d better!  Otherwise, they wouldn’t care.

There is also private insurance companies. In the event of a disaster, big or small, insurance companies are hesitant to pay out the money when the beneficiary is struck by a catastrophe and needs it.  These companies just don’t want to pay it.

So of what use is insurance these days if one cannot be protected by it in the event of a tragedy?

One more point in the article, rather long, but efficient.

“Conservatism should be a defense of government, against its abuse by liberals.”  (Roger Scrution, English philosopher, 1944-2020)

“The growth of the welfare state is one notable such abuse, causing people to ‘turn their backs on freedom and become locked in social pathologies that undermine the cohesion of society.’

“One sees this above all in the countries of the European Union, where government is no longer felt to be owned by the people but is the property of ‘an anonymous bureaucracy’ on which all depends for their comforts.  In the U.S., this is still only true of those who depend on government welfare, but their number is growing.”

There is a lot to swallow here.

I am not a Socialist, and I recognize the fact that the U.S. is not a Socialist country.  It never has been.

There has been a time in American history where, with a good, decent, well paying job, one could afford a house, a family, and afford to pay for food, medical bills, insurance, house and car repairs, a college education for their children, in other words, a good, decent living.

I know, I grew up in this society.

Today, all these institutions are not only extremely expensive, but are also predatory, especially insurance, the medical industry (with high drug prices and medical care) and education.

Both husband and wife working is not enough.  Banks charge high interest rates and will foreclose, i.e. taking their homes where something catastrophic happens within the family.

Many are forced to become homeless, move in with relatives who themselves can’t afford them, or they have to go on welfare.  They end up living in low quality dwellings and are charged high rents which the tenants cannot afford without government help.

Whose fault is this?  How did we ever reach a position such as this?  Was it greed?  Was it indifference?  Was it a loss of interest in maintaining a stable and prosperous society?

I cannot blame any one political party here, but the Conservatives are no better than the Liberals in this situation.

If the Conservatives say “That’s your problem,” or “Screw you,” what other alternative do these people have?

Here’s a paradox.  The Conservatives all favor corporate welfare, subsidizing big industries, especially fossil fuels.  Why?  These industries don’t need the money, they have enough profits to pay for whatever they need and any problem they need to confront.  So why subsidize them?  Many CEOs have their profits hoarded away on offshore accounts, and they don’t want to touch it.  So they depend on the government, i.e. the taxpayer, to give them more money so they can keep theirs, even though they would never miss it.  This is along with low tax rates.

This country, as a whole, is declining, but the Republicans don’t care, as long as they can hang on to their money and power.

When American society is finally divided into the very rich, who will be few, and the very poor, who will be the rest of us, with no middle class, we will collapse into sheer chaos, and NOBODY, even the rich, will be safe.

Conclusion

So there you have it.  If you don’t believe this, read the newspapers.  Read the words of Republican Senators and Congressmen to see what they’re saying.  Observe the expression on their faces when a bill that would otherwise benefit the American people gets killed, and they all rejoice.  Mitch McConnell especially has a smug and hateful look on his face, and that is what the Republican Congress has become.

Incidentally, at a recent rally, former President Donald Trump said that he will pardon everyone involved in the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol.  What does that say about him?  What will become of this society if he does?

The Republicans no longer care about the American people, and if they say otherwise, they are lying.  Problem is, not enough of their constituents realize this.

There was a times, even up to the 1980s, where the Republican Party did stand for the working class people and would stand behind those who are fending for themselves, or want to do so.

Those days are gone.  Now they stand for the very rich, being CEOs, industrialists, Wall Street executives, and other high positions on the ladder.  This may be because if the Republicans backs these people up, they will get a lot in return for it.

Many Republican voters today still cannot see this.  They still think that the Republican Party still stands for them, the working people, and that is no longer true.  They don’t care, and they do not respect them even when they vote for them and put them in office.  The Republicans will tell them what they want to hear, and then forget about them once they are in office.

There is one bright spot.  Many Republican Senators and Congressmen WANT to do what’s right, but they are afraid to vote against the wishes, orders really, of their leaders, Senate or House Leaders.  The fear of retaliation, even up to losing the next election.

One proof is that many wanted to vote for Trump’s removal from office during his impeachments, but were afraid to do so, because of the consequences they would suffer.

What they truly lack is courage.  A true Senator or Congressman would stand up for what he or she believes in and cast their votes based on that, regardless of how their peers may feel.

To these people, if you are reading this, all I can say is show your courage.  Many of you went to President Biden saying they wanted to vote to support his programs, but were afraid.

Get some courage, and show it.  Vote for your beliefs, regardless of what your fellow party members may think, and let the chips fall where they may.

If you are blackmailed, ignore them, and let them carry it out.  Other members will come to your defense.

If you are denied votes on your causes that are good for the nation others will back you.

If you lose certain privileges, so what!  Do without them.

Express your beliefs, that is what you are there for.

Go across the aisle and talk to opposing party members, you’ll be surprised at what they are willing to do for you.

In the end, you will gain more respect, from ALL members of the House and Senate.  This include self-respect, and, by speaking out, you will earn a more noticeable place in history.

This country is a Democracy.  It must remain that way.

The Republican Party is the Greatest Threat to American Democracy Today

“I know it’s written in the Constitution, but I don’t care!  Make me!

                                                                       -Senator Mitch McConnell

“Evil flourishes when good men do nothing.”

Note the quotes above.  What Mitch McConnell said, in refusing to hold hearings for the nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in 2016, is now the mantra of the Republican Party.  This party has lost all sense of morals and will now lie, cheat, and steal to get what they want, especially to win elections.  There chief desire is to obtain (more) money and power for themselves.

I write this essay on the first anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

The attack was incited by President Donald Trump, because he lost the Presidential election, but would not accept defeat.  So Trump claimed that the election was rigged, even after multiple recounts across the country, all confirming his defeat.

Radical Republicans and Trump supporters, including professionals, being doctors, lawyers, soldiers, policemen, pastors, teachers, people from all walks of life, were encouraged by Trump to march to the U.S. Capitol building while the electoral college was in session to officially confirm Joe Biden as the next President.  All of these people formed a mob and marched to the Capitol.

The mob arrived, broke windows, committing acts of vandalism, assaulting, even killing policemen and Capitol guards, while President Trump sat in the White House and gleefully watched the whole thing, without summoning any help.

Trump was impeached for the second time in his term, but was acquitted by the Senate, for the second time.  All who voted to acquit Trump were Republicans.  There were a few Republicans who voted to impeach him (Rep. Liz Cheney for one) but were ostracized by other Republicans, which brings us to the main theme of this essay, the Republican Party and the threat is represents to America today.

Even though there is a panel investigating the January 6, 2021 riot, and over 725 have been indicted, with a few already in jail, I feel that the Republicans in Congress, despite the fact that many of them had to hide in their offices from the mob that day, condoned the attack.

The 2022 off-year election is coming up to re-elect Congress, and one third of the Senate.  It is greatly assumed, and feared, that the Republican Party will regain control of both the Senate and the House, and they will then shut down the investigation, permanently, letting anyone involved get off scot free.  I will even go as far as to say that they will give a blanket pardon to those who are presently in jail, release them, and have everything they did stricken from their records.

Much of this will be for the party’s own protection, for there is evidence that many members of Congress may have had a part in this attack.

As a result, the Republicans will treat this entire incident as if it never happened, and this will only be the beginning.

The Republicans will change election laws to the utmost extreme, to make sure that no Republican candidate - local, state, or national, will ever lose another election.

The Republicans want one party rule, their party, permanently, for the whole United States.

Does this sound far fetched?

Consider these laws that have passed, are being passed, or have been submitted right now, and ask yourself why.  I will write the word “WHY” in capital letter at the end of each paragraph to stress the impact of what is happening.

First the HR1, the Voting Rights Act, guaranteeing every American citizen over the age of 18 the right to vote, yet the Republican Senate, led by Mitch McConnell, refuses to endorse this bill.

WHY?

In many cities, there are long lines of voters waiting to vote for literally hours on end because of too few polling places, while in other cities, there are plenty of polling stations for anyone in that city to go to, vote, and then leave within 20 minutes.

WHY?

In Georgia, where there are long lines to vote, with voters waiting long hours, a law was passed forbidding anyone to give the voters waiting to vote water if they are thirsty, or snacks if they are hungry, no matter how long these voters stand in line.

WHY?

Over 40 states are trying to pass voter suppression laws, limiting the number of people that can vote, for various reason, many of them trivial.  In other words, they are making harder for some people to vote.

WHY?

Voter fraud has been an issue with many party members, yet in all the election, especially the last, 2020, there has been no evidence of voter fraud, even after multiple recounts, yet Trump and his followers, and most of the Republican Party, still claim that the election was stolen from Trump.

WHY?   (Because Trump lost, and he is acting like a spoiled child)

In President Biden’s speech at the U.S. Capitol on the first anniversary of the rioting, Biden pointed out that the names of Senatorial, Congressional, and Gubernatorial candidates, all the way down to local officials, were on the same paper ballots as Joe Biden and Donald Trump, yet on these very same ballots, nobody, but nobody, ever claimed voter fraud to the winning candidates of other offices, as Trump and his followers did with Biden.

WHY?

Bills have been submitted giving the local governments the right to call any election invalid, giving the losing candidate the office no matter how few votes the candidate had received.  There does not have to be a reason for this, this is just to make sure the Republican candidate gets the office.

WHY?

Here are some other questions concerning Mitch McConnell and the Republican Party:

During the Obama Administration, Judge Anthony Kennedy stepped down as a Supreme Court Justice.  President Obama the nominated Merrick Garland to be the next Supreme Court Justice, pending a Congressional hearing, but Senator Mitch McConnell, then Senate Majority Leader, refused to hold it and chose to wait a year until after the election of 2016.

WHY?

When McConnell was reminded of what was in the U.S. Constitution, he replied, “I know it’s written in the Constitution, but I don’t care!  Make me!”

What does this say about Mitch McConnell?

First, a Senate Majority leader, or any government official, who has no regard for what is in the Constitution has no business being in government.

Not only should President Obama have “made him,” and he could have done so, but Mitch McConnell should have been impeached, and thrown out of office.  An elected official is sworn to uphold the Constitution and to defend it from enemies, foreign and domestic, and if that official doesn’t care what the Constitution say, he or she has no place in government.

Also, having no regard for the Constitution is the beginning of tyranny.

We had to wait a year before Trump was elected and then nominate a Conservative Judge to Mitch McConnell’s liking.

Ironically, when Judge Ruth Baden Ginsburg died four years later, McConnell rushed through Amy Coney Barrett fast, before Biden was sworn in as President.

Two Conservative Justices, one waited a year before nomination, the other almost instantaneous, with no regard for the Constitution, or to what Ruth Bader Ginsburg requested in her will, that no justice be nominated or sworn in until the next President of the U.S. is sworn in, yet Mitch McConnell complete disregarded her wishes and put in a justice immediately.

WHY?

Senate Majority/Minority leader Mitch McConnell stated that he will devote all his time and energy to make sure that Obama’s presidential terms will be a total failure.

WHY?  (Here, Obama did manage to surpass McConnell’s agenda most of the time.)

McConnell is now trying to do the same with President Biden.

WHY?

There is one exception to this.  McConnell did support Biden on rebuilding the national infrastructure.  He had to, because it would have been dangerous for McConnell not to, by losing popularity, and votes, from those who would have benefited from this bill.

Many bills, passed through Congress, move on to the Senate, as the Constitution requires, but end up on McConnell’s desk, to pile up and never be looked at, never mind passed.

WHY?

McConnell will not allow programs, initiated by the Democrats, to pass, even if they benefit his own constituents.

WHY?

McConnell obviously has too much power, which he abuses, simply to thumb his nose at the President of the United States.

The purpose of government officials, whether elected or not, is to work together for the benefit of the American people, not themselves, and not their party.  Yet they don’t seem to know this.

When an election ends, it’s over, period.  The victors, regardless of party, take their seats and work together to rebuild this country, secure it against all enemies, foreign and domestic (and we do have a lot of domestic enemies in government right now), and to pass laws that will benefit and protect society.

They are not in competition with each other, nor should a party boss tell other officials how to vote on any single issue.  Blackmail, which is a common occurrence, should be illegal.

This is not the Mafia.  Any and every Senator and Representative should vote on how he or she feels about an issue, not how the party feels.

They are Americans first.  Partisan politics should not even enter into this.  Democrats and Republicans need to work with each other again.

They are here to serve, not to be served.  It seems that too many politicians have forgotten that.

This has evolved into a war where the Republicans (Reds) and the Democrats (Blues) have polarized and will not speak to each other.  We are headed in the direction of a new Civil War, and that’s bad.

Here are two examples.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene advocated that any Democrat that moves to a Red state should NOT be allowed to vote.  Greene is the epitome of Partisan hatred.  She is both crazy and dangerous.

Also, it is greatly feared that many Republican officials, especially Donald Trump, should he get re-elected President (I hope not) and Senator Mitch McConnell, should he retake the Senate Majority, will take REVENGE against Democrats that have gone against their agendas in the past.

Hatred?  Revenge?  Is this any way a government should be run?

Trump will never concede the election, even after multiple recounts.  Still, he calls the election stolen, and his followers, no matter what their profession or how high on the scale they are, believe him.

In all other elections, when a candidate lost, he or she conceded with dignity, and their supporters, no matter who they are, have accepted defeat.

Why should this be any different now?

Instead, they are rioting, committing acts of vandalism, sending death threats to officials who count and tabulate the votes.  Many elected officials are now going as far as to submit new “Jim Crow 2.0” bills, hoping they will pass.  They would make it difficult for Blacks and other minorities to vote.  This is because they usually vote Democratic, increasing the chances that Republicans would lose certain elections.

Republican politicians, including Trump, have gone as far as to admit that they will steal the next election.

The biggest question is, which nobody has ever brought up is - what do the Republicans have to offer the whole United States?

Our infrastructure is deteriorating, and fortunately, President Biden has managed to pass the infrastructure part of his “Build Back Better” plan, but we need to do more.

The Republicans want to outlaw abortion, but they have nothing better to put in its place.  (Note:  You may not like abortion, but it IS a woman’s right.  I believe in absolute gender equality, and a woman is NOT property.  If you are a male reading this, you need to accept that.  Also, the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak.   The technology for abortion exists, and wherever it will be outlawed, that woman will either go where it is legal and get one, or she will go to the back alleys, and they WILL exist, no matter what.

It must also be noted that “abortion mafias” will come into existence.  This means that in a place like Texas, where abortions are illegal after six weeks, (and people can inform on the woman and the provider) the back alleys will prop up, and if anyone informs of their activities, these informers will be hunted down and killed by “mobsters.”  This WILL happen, no matter how outlandish it may seem now.

The Republicans will NOT pass bills to protect women from domestic violence.

Again, WHY?

Do they think that a man can do as he pleases to his wife, beat, torture, and even kill her?

How do the Republicans really feel about woman’s equality?  Do they support it?  Or do they think that a woman is subject to ownership by a male?  How do woman Republicans feel about equality for women?  How about domestic violence?

The Republicans know that our economy is in trouble, but they continue to lower taxes for the rich, money that the rich will never use, do not need, and cannot even begin to spend.  They just want to hoard it.  Which will make that very money worth nothing!

This makes less money available to the federal budget, money needed to pay for fire, police, the infrastructure, and education, to name a few.

The money to pay for rebuilding the infrastructure will not come from raising taxes on the rich.

The Republicans do this so they can get money and votes from these entities so they can keep being re-elected.  (It must be noted that there are Democrats in this same position.  Think of Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, supported by the coal companies, which he gets a kickback.)

And so it goes for issues like gun control.  The Republicans will alway oppose it, no matter how many mass killings occur.

So what do the Republicans have to offer the American people?  Not much, because they don’t care.  All they care about is money and power for themselves, and if the average American is left holding the bag, well, it doesn’t matter to them.

What about education;  alternative energy;  the environment;  the Corona Virus?

They care for none of these things.  Education doesn’t mean anything to them.  They would like to control it, even rewrite history in their favor, starting with the riots of January 6, 2021.

Alternative energy is a threat to them because it cuts into the profits of fossil fuel companies, and their own since they are taking “donations” from them for their campaigns, and their pockets.

When it comes to protecting the environment and climate change, forget it!

First, they say they do not believe in climate change, but I think that many of them do.  In spite of this, they deny because they feel that if they were to try and fight it, it would cut into their profits and two, many more powerful Republicans would turn on them and punish them.

They care absolutely nothing for the environment.  Nothing!  They want unlimited mining, especially for coal, but also fracking, oil pumped anywhere and everywhere in all environmentally sensitive areas, including the ocean.  If there is a disastrous oil spill, it won’t matter to them.  Nothing will be done.

They will permit the logging of forests, no matter how ancient, they will permit the mining of unique and sacred areas, they will permit unlimited damage and cause unlimited pollution.  Did I tell you they will abolish anti-pollution laws?  Trump attempted just that, and succeeded in some areas.

For Covid vaccinations and protection from the virus?  This baffles me.  How can ANYONE be anti-vaccine, especially with a pandemic engulfing the whole world, and a method of prevention is available, yet they are against it.  Many anti-vaxxers  do change their minds, when they are dying in a hospital bed, and then it’s too late.

I feel that the Republican Party is run like the Mafia, with each politician being told how to vote regardless how each individual may otherwise feel.  If they were to vote against the grain, they would suffer severe consequences, like being ostracized and be unable to run for office again.

I believe that many Senate Republicans wanted to have Trump removed from office and be banned from ever running again after leaving office, but were afraid to do so because of what might happen to them, even suffer Trump’s wrath with the power he still had.

Any Republican who wishes for redemption must be brave enough to stand up to both Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump and truly speak his or her mind.  Liz Cheney is one such person, and there are a few others, but only a few.

I am sorry to say that the majority of Republicans are cowards.  They cannot stand up for themselves and do the right thing by fighting the evil that now prevails in our government.  That is the bottom line.

If Donald Trump ever gets re-elected in 2024, it will be a disaster for all of us.  He will reinstate disastrous rulings that have been banned under the Biden Administration, will once again alienate our allies, and he will exact revenge on anyone and everyone who previously opposed him in any way.

It will be Hell on Earth for the U.S, and the rest of the world.

This will only be the beginning.

If the Republican Party should exact one-party run starting in 2022, the United States will have little or no hope for the future as a democracy.

Here is a listing of what is to come, should this come to pass:

Women will lose their rights they have fought for for the past 150 years - all gone!

Also, abortion will be outlawed.  It doesn’t matter what your views on this are.  It is a woman’s right, and hers alone.

Blacks and all other minorities will lose their rights that they have fought for and achieved.  The United States will revert back to the Jim Crow laws of the early 20th century.

Gays and Lesbians will lose their rights.  You may not approve of their lifestyle, but what a person does with his or her private life is nobody’s business but their own.

Note:  I know that a lot of you feel that this goes against Christian doctrine, but America is NOT a Christian country, nor it is of any other religion.  The first amendment of the Constitution guarantees a complete and total separation of Church and State here, and it must be respected by ALL elected officials, and it must remain that way.

The U.S. Constitution will be torn up and disregarded.  It’s happening already.  Remember what Senator Mitch McConnell in nominating the next Supreme Court Justice:  “I know it’s written in the Constitution, but I don’t care!  Make me!”  Remember that quote, if not anything else.

The investigations of the riots on January 6, 2021 will come to a halt, all evidence destroyed, and all those who participated will receive a blanket pardon and get off scot free.  Those who are already in jail will be released, and have their crimes stricken from their record.

Any politician involved, up to and including Trump, will be pardoned and/or overlooked, and Congress will act as if this event never happened;  or they will treat it as a guided tour or a wild party with the attitude, “Boys will be boys!”

From that point on, any Republican politician committing any crime, including murder and theft, will be overlooked by the law, now controlled by the Republican majority.

America will become a totalitarian state, with punishments up to and including the death penalty, should any citizen break ANY law Republicans they deem offensive, no matter what it is.  This includes criticism of their government be it by spoken or written word.

One could go to jail for criticizing the one-party government.

Freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, will be outlawed.

Meanwhile, the right to keep and bear arms will be increased and go to extremes, mostly by “Republican Patriots” who feel they can kill anyone not faithful to the Republican Party.

There is a chance that America could become a theocracy, as in The Handmaid’s Tale.  (See the series, or read the book to comprehend this statement).

The environment will be doomed.  Environmental protection laws will be abolished, and industries will be able to pollute to their heart’s content.

The gap between rich and poor will widen, with the rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer.  There will be no middle class.

Benefits like Social Security and Medicare will be abolished.

The world will be alienated by what we are doing, and one by one, they will break off diplomatic relations.

We will fall as a world power, but those governing the U.S. will not care.   All they will care about is gaining more money and power for themselves.

Many states on both the east and west coasts, and the region around the Great Lakes, will not stand for all this and secede from the Union, and form two, three, or four separate countries.

There may or may not be a civil war, but if there is, it will be bloody.

I can see the northern states all along the Canadian border, including Alaska, joining Canada.

All right, all of this may not happen all at once, but it will happen.

We cannot have the Republican Party ruling the United States under one party rule, because we have already seen what they are capable of doing.

We cannot have one party rule under any party.

The only solution I see that is half way decent is:

Abolish the Electoral College and elect the President of the United States by Popular Vote only.  This will insure that NO voter fraud will occur, nor will any candidate call “fraud” should he lose the election.  Should fraud occur, it will be spotted right away.  There are too many voters for this to happen.

Ban Gerrymandering and set up an independent, non-partisan committee to draw up congressional districts according to set standards, without the influence from any other entity.

Set up a multi-party system like they have in Europe, especially Germany.  The two party system is failing.  Corruption has seeped in and cannot be corrected except by complete and total change.  No one party should have absolute power.  “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely!”

The Republican Party, beyond the shadow of a doubt, needs to be abolished.  It needs to be replaced by a more decent, far seeing party that will put our country first, over and above party, consisting of decent, non-corrupt individuals that will vote their beliefs and conscience, not what any party leader dictates.

The Democrats have many of the same faults as the Republicans, but fortunately, not as much.  Yet.  They still have a shred of decency in them, but their biggest flaw is that many of them are weak and unorganized.  They know the faults of the Republican and they know that if they were to go back into power, they would destroy the United States.

Yet, they are not doing enough to stop the Republicans.  They are collecting donations from individual Americans (and I am a donor) but they are not doing enough after that.

They need to get together, forming strong organizations (and some do exist), see the mistakes they’ve made in the past, and correct them.  They need to see how they have lost previous elections that were vital to this country and adapt a new strategy.

Once they see the mistakes they’ve made, they can avoid them and adapt a strategy of how they can reach out to more Americans, especially in the Red states.

They need to go into these hard-core Republican states and offer these voters a better deal.  They need to see what these voters need, and focus on them.  They need to tell them how Trump and his followers have let them down, that they don’t care about them, why they don’t care (using them for their own ends), and how they, the Democrats, do care and can make their lives better.

Then, when they are elected, follow through with their promises.

Keeping ones promises and offering a better deal and following through on it after they are elected is vital for any politician, and party, if he or she wants to both serve their country and remain in office for a long time to come.

Ukraine Revisited

“Ukraine, or rather Eastern Ukraine, will come back in five, ten or fifteen years.  Western Ukraine can go to Hell!”

The above quote still applies today (2022) as the time it was said.

As it stands, Putin now has over 100,000 troops stationed on Eastern Ukraine’s border.

Biden, at Putin’s request, has had a second phone/video conference with Biden getting bolder, threatening Putin with “decisive action that will include NATO.

Putin’s response was that should Biden even impose severe economic sanctions, diplomatic relations with Russian may be severed.

Biden is getting bolder and Putin is taking this seriously.  This is in Biden’s favor, because this may gain more respect for Biden worldwide, including here at home (the U.S.).  In defense of Biden, he, as President has had a rough and difficult first year in office, and a first year for any President is always difficult and unpopular.

Putin has stated that he doesn’t want to invade Ukraine, and doesn’t want to acquire more land for Russia.  He just doesn’t want NATO at its borders.

This could be true.  Throughout its history, Russia has had constant invasions from the Mongols to the German Nazis and as a result, the Russians (Soviets) used Eastern Europe as a buffer zone during the Cold War.

With the Soviet Union gone and Eastern Europe free, NATO has admitted many of these countries, including the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Obviously, Russia has very must resented this action.  They fear that NATO will eventually admit both Ukraine and Georgia, and possibly Moldova (unless it becomes part of Romania, which is already in NATO).

Putin fears missile bases, military exercises, and NATO soldiers and artillery close to the Russian border.

These fears are legitimate, except for the fact that in its 70 year history, NATO has never attacked Russia, and has no desire to do so now.  It is Putin, with his troops at the border and threatening Ukraine and demanding that it stays in Russia sphere of influence, that is pushing Ukraine farther to the West, with the desire to join NATO and the European Union.  Ukraine wants to be free to do what it chooses, and should have that freedom.

Ukraine has always been a part of Russia, but the Ukrainians are a separate ethnic group and has always wanted their own identity.  They also hate Russia.

There is the incident where Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, but Crimea itself is ethnically Russia, always has been.  It was only in 1954 that Khrushchev, at a dinner party, and probably drunk, gave Crimea to Ukraine as a gift.   It didn’t really matter until the Soviet Union disbanded.

On a map where the Russian troops are located, they are most mostly located in Russia and a small part of Belarus, surrounding Eastern Ukraine, the Russian speaking part, not Western Ukraine.  So Ukraine is only halfway surrounded, in a semicircle.  In the rest of Ukraine, being Western Ukraine, the border is on the free countries, with a few of them in NATO.

In much of Eastern Ukraine, about 30%, speak Russian.  What is unusual is that  49% of Ukrainian backed Viktor Yanakovich in a presidential election held back in 2010, meaning that 19% who backed the Russian candidate were Ukrainian, or some other ethnic group living in Ukraine.

It’s a lot more complex than that.  In 1991, in a referendum held for Ukrainian independence from the Soviet Union, 90% of Ukrainians voted for independence, meaning both Russian and Ukrainian speakers.

It should be noted that many Russian speaking Ukrainians are bilingual and do very well speaking either Russian or Ukrainian in Ukrainian society.

Putin has all those troops along the border so he can intimidate Ukraine into giving in to his demands.  This is like pointing a gun to someone’s head to rob him.

However, the Ukrainians are not being intimidated.  Ukrainian troops , who are well trained, are also massing at the border, with many volunteers also being trained, along with the West sending arms.  Ukraine has organized militias composed of professions soldiers and fighters, and they will no doubt kill thousands of Russian soldiers, even after the Russians invade and occupy Ukraine.

Should Russia attack, they will no doubt overwhelm and defeat Ukraine, but it will be a bloody war nonetheless, with many Russian soldiers returning home in coffins.  This could end up being a Pyrrhic victory, coming at great cost to Russia.

In addition, the West will slap severe sanctions that will hurt Russia’s economy, and Putin knows this.  Along with the cutting off of the new Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Europe, it has been estimated that Russia will lose two thirds of its trade revenues, and this will greatly affect Russian society.

The Russian people, who generally do not support this invasion, will no doubt be angry.  Protests and demonstrations will arise, and Putin will lose a lot of his popularity.

This war will be a disaster for Russia, even if they win.  Hence the definition of “Pyrrhic victory.”

Russian troops remain at Ukraine’s border nonetheless, and they are threatening regardless.  They have their demands, but Ukraine and the West must stand up to Putin and ignore his threats.  Biden, to his credit, is doing just that.

There is the Donbass region.  After annexing Crimea, Russia supported the Donbass rebels, those wanting to break off from Ukraine and become an independent country, and possibly a client state of Russia.

Donbass consists of the two most eastern provinces of Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk.  The inhabitants are the Russian speaking majority in these two provinces.

One thing Ukraine can do is to abandon Donbass to Russia and then completely break off from its “sphere of influence” and join both NATO and the European Union, no matter how Putin reacts.  For their part, NATO and the E.U. should accept them immediately, and then send in troops and representatives, on the spot.

Although Donbass is a part of Ukraine,  and I have in the past urged Ukraine to keep it, it is in reality a thorn in Ukraine’s side, costing Ukraine billions of dollars in fighting the Russian backed rebels with nothing to show for it but ravaged cities and towns, with no signs of ending anytime soon.  The only solution here would be for Ukraine to cut its losses.  If Donbass (Luhansk and Donetsk) wants to be an independent state, they should be free to be one.  If Russia chooses, or be forced to annex it, which would be more likely the case, Russia will be tied down with constant chaos that Russia will have to spend years to calm.  It could serve as a buffer zone against NATO, but it would also be a headache for Russia.

As stated Ukraine and Georgia should join NATO right away, under the pressure of the United States, if necessary.  In Georgia’s case, have U.S. and British warships immediately dock at their ports, and from there, set up military bases.

Should NATO accept Ukraine, they must make a pledge to Russia that NATO will never attack, only defend its territories.  It is Putin’s fault that this crisis is happening in the first place, invading Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014, along with annexing it, inciting chaos in Donbass, and then sending troops along the Ukrainian border.  It is Putin that is threatening war, and we, the West, are only defending ourselves.  We should not give in to Putin’s demands but to show him that we, the West, and the world will not tolerate his aggressiveness and his bullying.  Putin needs to be dealt with, harshly, and we must show the world that we are not afraid of him.

What Putin and Russia needs to know is that Europe and NATO is not a threat to Russia.  Russia is a threat to Europe, and that is why NATO exists.  If Russia would simple let Eastern Europe, including the former Soviet Republics go their own merry way without any interference, there would be a need for NATO, thereby being no threat to Russia.

Putin is living in the past, with a desire for the revival of the Soviet Union, and he has not realized that this is a part of history that will never occur again.  These countries are now on their own.  Putin needs to accept this.

If and when Ukraine is admitted into the European Union, which should be immediately, they, with help from the U.S., should set up a Marshall Plan to not only rebuild Ukraine but make it a commercial cross roads between Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and yes, Russia.

An independent and thriving Ukraine will prove to be an asset to the global economy, as well as a valuable ally to the western world, especially to the U.S.

We must protect Ukraine now from a Russian invasion, even if it is just a threat.
